Pencils FAQs

Find helpful answers to common questions about choosing, using and caring for pencils, from everyday writing essentials to drawing and sketching supplies.

What is the difference between HB and 2B pencils?

HB pencils have a balanced graphite grade suitable for everyday writing and general drawing. 2B pencils contain softer graphite that produces darker marks, making them useful for sketching and shading.

What pencils are best for school?

HB pencils are commonly used for schoolwork because they provide clear marks and are easy to erase. Depending on classroom requirements, students may also need coloured pencils, mechanical pencils and other writing supplies.

Are mechanical pencils better than wooden pencils?

Both have their advantages. Mechanical pencils provide a consistent line without regular sharpening, while wooden pencils are versatile for writing, drawing and shading. The best choice depends on your preferred grip and intended use.

What pencils are best for drawing?

Graphite pencils in different grades are useful for drawing. Harder grades create lighter lines, while softer grades produce darker shading. Coloured pencils are also popular for illustrations and creative artwork.

What is the difference between graphite pencils and coloured pencils?

Graphite pencils contain a graphite-based core used for writing, sketching and shading. Coloured pencils contain pigmented cores designed to create colourful marks, making them useful for drawing, colouring and creative projects.

How do I keep my pencils in good condition?

Store pencils in a pencil case or container to help protect the tips from damage. Use a suitable sharpener for wooden pencils and avoid dropping them, as impacts can break the core inside.
